WHAT IS CANDIDA?
Four types of microorganisms – fungi, bacteria, parasites and viruses, inhabit the gut microbiota. Candida belongs to a number of yeast-like fungi. Candida albicans (albicans – whitish (lat.)) – is one of the varieties of candida that causes candidiasis or thrush. It is the most common cause of fungal infection in humans. Candida is a microorganism that lives on all mucous membranes (in the eyes, nose, mouth, vagina and anus), on the surface of the skin and nails, but mainly in the intestines. This fungus can be called an opportunistic pathogen, i.e. usually, it does not interfere with our daily life in any way, but under favourable conditions, it begins to multiply and grow. This condition is called candidiasis. One certain way to restore the balance of bacteria in the gut is to starve the candida on the Candida Diet. When Candida die-off, they produce a variety of symptoms, as bad as a severe hangover.
SYMPTOMS OF CANDIDIASIS.
- Fog in the head;
- stomach bloating;
- fungus on the feet and nails;
- Mood swings.
WHAT CAUSES CANDIDIASIS?
- The most common reason is usually Western lifestyle and diet. Bread, carbohydrates, alcohol and sweets are just the perfect type of food for candida and help them grow “like yeast” (which is what they are).
- Antibiotics significantly disrupt the balance of the intestinal microflora, as they kill beneficial lactobacillus and allow candida to take over.
- Hormonal contraceptives negatively influence progesterone production, thus allowing estrogen to dominate. This creates ideal conditions for candida to grow. During pregnancy, the same thing happens – increased estrogen, which is why pregnant women often have candidiasis.
- Steroid drugs can cause candidiasis, since they reduce immunity. Where there is reduced immunity, candida will thrive.
HOW DO YOU FIGHT CANDIDIASIS?
The simplest way is to starve the fungus (literally). It takes about 3 to 6 weeks of time for Candida die-off, during which you will need to be on a strict diet.
A diet during candidiasis implies a complete (temporary) rejection of yeast products and all carbohydrates types: sugar, alcohol, dried fruits, fruits and starchy vegetables (all products that Candida loves so much).
What is allowed and not allowed?
The first week of the candida diet is usually the worst – as candida die-off, they let out about 79 different forms of toxins! The examples of these toxins would be acetaldehyde and gliotoxin, which may severely worsen your well-being. Acetaldehyde is a standard byproduct of candida during its life, however, when it dies, candida releases acetaldehyde in vast quantities.
During their life, as well as die-off, Candida releases all these toxins into the blood. If you have any inflammatory processes going on, such as IBSm that you are not aware of, this can make them worse. Thus, candida increases the level of chronic inflammation in the body.
Candida also produces neurotoxins and there is a variety of studies, which imply that this toxin is carcinogenic.
WHICH SYMPTOMS ACCOMPANY THE CANDIDA DIE-OFF?
Candidiasis treatment can be accompanied by symptoms, similar to a severe hangover.
Acetaldehyde (a toxin produced by candida) is also a product of alcohol metabolism, so candidiasis and its treatment can be very reminiscent of a severe hangover. That is, symptoms could be the following:
- Muscle pain;
- Increased heart rate;
- Excessive sweating;
- Runny nose;
- Lack of energy;
According to one theory, there is a connection between cancer and candidiasis. Candida decreases immune function in cancer patients, and carries a toxic load which is too high for the liver of such patients (acetaldehyde).
HOW CAN YOU MAKE THE CANDIDA DIE-OFF EASIER?
The first week will be the most difficult, try to relax more and drink plenty of water these days. If you drink probiotics, take a short break or reduce the dosage as some probiotics can cause bloating when you adapt to them. It is possible to try alternative ways to remove toxins – a sauna (do not forget to drink a little more water), lymphatic drainage massage or a contrast shower are excellent ways to help the body cope with toxins.
Detox during candidiasis can help relieve the digestive system and intestinal mucosa
The following supplements were proven to help some people during this time:
- olive leaf extract;
- oregano oil (has healing properties, natural antibiotic);
- caraway tea (you can simply pour boiling water over the grain);
- milk thistle oil (milk thistle supports liver function and helps it eliminate toxins);
- nigella seeds;
- vitamin C;
HOW CAN YOU CHECK WHETHER YOU HAVE CANDIDIASIS? A TEST THAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME.
Take a transparent glass of water and place it next to your table at night. In the morning on an empty stomach, you need to (abundantly) spit into a glass and observe for an hour whether the white particles will sink to the bottom and if the water at the bottom of the glass becomes muddy, and whether there will be something like cords between the bottom and the surface of the water. White particles and cords mean that you have candidiasis. Next, it is better to consult a doctor and get tested.
Have you ever had candidiasis? Even if it goes away without symptoms, it is important to maintain the balance of bacteria and support your immune system.
